Day 1:CUSCO, EXPLORATION OF HUMANTAY LAKE AND CAMPING AT SORAYPAMPA

Your Salkantay Trek Adventure Begins in Cusco

Your Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco’s Historic Center between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. After meeting your professional trekking guide and fellow travelers, we’ll depart in our private transportation toward the charming Andean village of Mollepata, enjoying a scenic drive of approximately two hours through the breathtaking landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.

Breakfast in Mollepata

Upon arrival in Mollepata, you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast included in your tour. This stop also gives you time to purchase any last-minute snacks, use the restroom, and prepare for the day’s adventure before continuing deeper into the Andes.

Journey to Soraypampa

After breakfast, we’ll continue for about one hour by vehicle until we reach Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), the official starting point of the Salkantay Trek.

Here you’ll meet our experienced support team, including horsemen and pack horses, who will transport your duffel bag throughout the trek. Your guide will explain the day’s itinerary and ensure everyone is ready before beginning the hike.

Hike to Humantay Lake

The adventure officially begins with a spectacular hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,780 ft), one of Peru’s most beautiful glacial lakes.

The trail takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, following a gradual ascent before the final climb to the lake. Along the way you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Andes, snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear streams, and the impressive Humantay Glacier.

Explore the Spectacular Humantay Lake

Upon reaching Humantay Lake, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in Peru. Its brilliant turquoise waters, surrounded by towering snow-covered peaks, make it one of the highlights of the Salkantay Trek.

Enjoy plenty of time to:

  • Take incredible photographs.

  • Relax and admire the scenery.

  • Learn about the cultural and spiritual importance of the lake from your guide.

  • Experience the peaceful atmosphere of this sacred Andean destination.

The visit typically lasts 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on weather conditions.

Descend to Soraypampa Camp

After exploring Humantay Lake, we’ll descend back toward our exclusive campsite near Soraypampa, surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and breathtaking views of the majestic Salkantay Mountain.

The descent is easier than the ascent and allows you to fully appreciate the dramatic landscapes of the Andes from a different perspective.

Freshly Prepared Lunch and Free Afternoon

We’ll arrive at camp around 2:00 p.m., where our trekking chef will welcome you with a freshly prepared lunch made from local ingredients.

After lunch, you’ll have time to settle into your accommodation, relax, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings while taking in the incredible views of the snow-capped Salkantay Peak.

After exploring Machu Picchu, you can choose between two return options.

Return by Train (Recommended)

The train is the fastest and most comfortable way to return to Cusco.

This option includes:

  • Train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo
  • Private transportation from Ollantaytambo to Cusco
  • Arrival at approximately 6:30 p.m.
  • More free time in Aguas Calientes
  • Ideal for visitors hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain

Return by Car (Included)

The standard tour includes the return by tourist transportation via Hydroelectrica.

You’ll hike approximately 3 hours from Machu Picchu to Hydroelectrica before boarding the vehicle back to Cusco.

Estimated arrival in Cusco is around 9:30–10:00 p.m.

This option is ideal for travelers looking for the most economical return.

What In Not Included

ENTRANCE TICKET TO HUMANTAY LAGOON:

  • On the first day of the trek, you will visit Humantay Lagoon. This site requires an entrance ticket, which is paid to the local government of Mollepata. The cost is 20 soles for foreigners (approximately 6 dollars) and 10 soles for Peruvians (approximately 3 dollars). Payment is made in soles and in cash at the entrance to the lagoon.

SLEEPING BAG:

  • If you don’t have a sleeping bag suitable for the mountains, you can rent one from us. The sleeping bags we offer are specially designed to withstand the low temperatures of the Salkantay Trek, which can reach -5 degrees and even -15 degrees.
  • 🛏️ Sleeping bag -5°C: $10 USD for the entire route (for countries located at much higher altitudes or people who do not feel the cold as much)
  • 🛏️ Sleeping bag -12°C: $20 USD for the entire route (for warm countries or low altitudes or people who feel the cold a lot)
  • Everyone is required to leave their driver’s license or other valid personal document as collateral, or leave a $100 USD deposit. This is because the rental fee does not cover the cost of the sleeping bags. You will receive the deposit when you return to our office. If you are traveling that same day, we will wait for you at an agreed-upon location.

TREKKING POLES:

  • You can rent a pair of professional trekking poles from us. These poles are adjustable according to the type of terrain and are very helpful, especially on steep and rough terrains. They optimize your performance, and the rental cost is 15 dollars for the entire trek.

SANTA TERESA HOT SPRINGS:

  • On the third day of the trek, you will finish hiking around 11 a.m. Afterward, you will have lunch, followed by some free time in the afternoon. Most visitors choose to visit the Santa Teresa hot springs, which are located about an hour away by car from the Lucmabamba campsite.
  • This option costs approximately 40 soles, which covers local transportation from the camp to the hot springs. The price of transportation is 15 or 20 soles each way (40 soles in total) and admission to the hot springs costs 10 soles, making a total of 50 soles for transportation and admission. This payment can be made directly on site.
  • Visiting the hot springs is optional; if you prefer, you can relax at the Lucmabamba campsite in preparation for Day 4, which is one of the most significant days of the entire trek.

DRINKING WATER FOR BOTTLES:

  • We do not include refilling of water bottles, but we provide water for hot and cold drinks at each meal. For bottle water, you have two options: buy mineral water at small shops along the Salkantay Trail, with prices ranging from 5 to 12 soles per 2.5-liter bottle, or carry a filter or purification tablets for mountain water.

INTERNET CONNECTION:

  • There is no cell signal from 9 am on the first day until reaching the second camp. At this camp, you can access Wi-Fi for 10 soles. After the third day, you will generally have cell signal and internet access.

SHOWERS AND TOILETS ALONG THE TRAIL:

  • Toilets are available at the campsites at no cost, but locals may charge 1 sol for using theirs along the way. As for showers, the second camp offers hot showers for 10 soles, while cold showers are free. You also have the option to visit the hot springs on the third day or use the hot showers at the Aguas Calientes hostel on the fourth day. Generally, there are no showers available at the first camp due to the low temperatures.

TIPS:

  • Tips are optional. Feel free to tip or not, but in this tourism service industry, the individuals involved in the course of this trek expect a tip, which occurs not only in our company but also in all trekking companies in Cusco. Everyone working at Machu Picchu Jungle is paid fairly for the work they perform; we even pay much more than companies that charge very high costs for the same trek. Feel free to give a tip or not, but we want to clarify that it is optional, not mandatory.

WE DO NOT INCLUDE TRAVEL INSURANCE:

  • We suggest acquiring one in your country, as it can be difficult to obtain travel insurance in Peru.
